Lucky to be here...

A marvellous new "macaron" shop just opened on Charleville Blvd (at Beverly Drive,) called Paulette. I can't say enough about the exquisite flavors and texture of these light-as-air tongue-pleasing bits of delicious...each colorful creation is more yummy than the last!

Coming to my neighborhood? You'll have to make sure and try them. I have a feeling that these macarons are totally addictive (oh no!)

Donna's good friend Richard (the owner of Kensington Caterers) was sweet enough to invite Elliot into his prep kitchen (at the Science Museum) to help out for the day. Elliot sauteed garlic, prepared a savory artichoke mousse, and stirred/chopped/puree'd all afternoon, readying for a major event. He's a natural!

The Best in Town...

Dinner with Holly and Jeannine tonight; I had to introduce them to my new fave, Ketchup at Sunset Plaza. This time 'round we had the handsome "Cooper" (a.k.a. Ryan Cooper) waiting away, with his beautiful blond trainee learning the ropes. The wonderful Darren Eichhorn was at the next station, but popped over for a warm hello (HELLO!)
I thought Cooper had a very biblical look about him (it must have been the beard!)

Warmth was the keyword tonight...the Wine & Spirits manager, Kell, took the time to chat us up and invited us to join him in the lounge after our meal for some complimentary cocktails. What a great guy! He had a Montgomery Clift essence about him, although he had no idea who Montgomery Clift was.

Here was a treat...the restaurant features a special cart they roll around, with two girls pouring and serving FREE shots!

They poured out a Grape Jello shot for me (just like candy!)

We girls ordered wisely:

These Kobe Beef grilled Hot Dog sliders topped with all the fixins' were da bomb!

Also yum were the mini chicken tacos served up with fresh guacamole...

And the Kobe Beef burger sliders.

The girls loved the fresh baked hot pretzels and the trio of fries (see my past posts!)...as well as the five-flavors of ketchup.
Holly liked the fresh baked Ding Dong with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream so much, that she took an extra one home for Philip & Alec (and added some of their famous chocolate chunk cookies for a more dramatic effect.)

We got a rain-check from Kell for the cocktails (my Apple Martini was just too good!) and headed downstairs to the cars. Walking out, I noticed the handsome host behind the desk and asked to take his picture. "You look like Boogie" I told him...he replied "I am Boogie!" Yes, it was the charismatic Mike "Boogie" Malin, from Big Brother, and yes, he is the owner of Ketchup (among his other eateries!)

What a great night! When I got home, I whipped out my camera to show the kids (before the download...)and Allie immediately said "Wow, that's Mike!" Not bad for a ten-year-old. Of course, we love our television shows...the kids filled me in on the episode I missed tonight (Jen got voted off!)

Celebrating!

I had a wonderful evening celebrating my newest venture ...joining forces with Teri from my favorite children's site, The Elegant Child. I'll be adding my blogging dynamics and such to her world, helping to spread the word about her fab services (and doing some spectacular custom paintings on celebrity gifts as well!)

Harm took me to The Abbey in WeHo with Izze and Allie, where I was served up this enormous Grey Goose apple martini.

Who did we run into but the charismatic Andrew, from Wolfgang Puck, who charmed us with a fresh round of martinis!

He is working his magic at Wolfgang's newest venue, the PDC (Pacific Design Center on Melrose and San Vicente, ) where they're expanding the wedding world's imagination and tossing in some of Puck's signature delicious dining at Red 7. Yum (can't wait to go there!)

Idyllwild Arts Summer Program's original musical, Down the Block last Saturday.
What a wonderful show...the entire cast was marvellous, and the audience went wild! I can't wait until next year.

TART

On Tuesday night, Beau, Izze, Allie and I hit Tart at the Farmer's Daughter (on Fairfax) for a quick (cheap!) bite.

Our Tuesday review: Excellent (except for the dessert, which was frozen.)

This "Killer Macaroni" is only $4. per serving...we ordered one, and if fed four!

They also give you a complementary cast-iron skillet filled with fresh-baked kernel-filled corn bread, served with a scoop of butter and a crock of honey!

Add another $4. to the bill to order this mozzarella/tomato/basil/red onion salad; also enough to share. So good!

The frozen "Tiger's Cake"...described as delicious by the girls when thawed. It was beautiful.

Anyway, we all went back Thursday night with Donna, Chorale and Kaitlin too, to show off our find (we love a deal!)
Where were the servers? Donna had told the hostess that we'd love to get some drinks right away, but it took a good fifteen minutes for the girls to come take our orders.
Of course, they were new waitresses being trained on their first day. They didn't know what they were doing and gave all the cornbread to another table (then brought us ours after the food had been served,) and the bartender was not the same, so Beau's Mojito was overfilled with the mint leaf garnish. Everything was wrong...even the macaroni was watery!
Donna ordered a fudge brownie with french vanilla ice cream, and hot apple pie a la mode (drizzled with caramel...) the girls gave the desserts some major snaps, but that was about it.

Too bad, So sad. But it was still a deal!

Yes, we missed Big Brother, but I am relieved that Evil Dick was not voted off, glad to see Dustin go, and am disgusted with the anti-semetic remarks that Amber spewed out. There are too many ignorant, narrow-minded, prejuduced people out there (shameful!)

This is Los Angeles.

I was walking up Melrose with Beau and Allie the other night, when we spotted a couple of cute chairs in the window of what I thought was just an upscale boutique. Allie asked me to take a picture, and told me that she wanted one for her bedroom. I said "yeah, right...that's like an $1800. chair!"
She asked if we could go inside and sit on one; we weren't in any rush, so into the shop we went.

"Wait!" I shouted to Allie, as she was about to rush into the seat...there were "Do Not Touch" signs all over the floor. This was no she-she boutique...but an ART GALLERY...and that fluffy chair wasn't even $1800. ...it was $75,000.!!!
How crazy is that!!!
I can make one of these babies myself!

At a specialty camp for the next two weeks. He got accepted to the Idyllwild Arts Summer Program up in the San Bernardino Mountains, and is performing in an original musical production.

Dinner on Donna

Donna was invited out to dinner with her "Women of Steel" group, and our girls wanted out as well. Being the sweet mommy that she is, Donna slapped some cash on me to take the little ladies out to the new hot spot they've been aching to try: Ketchup on Sunset.

I'm letting you know right now...if you want an excellent dining experience, this is the place.

Allie and Izze shared the lobster lettuce wraps (two on the plate, with Mango Ketchup! Mmmmm.)

Darren Eichhorn was our waiter for this evening of perfection. Yes, he's an actor...but an amazing guy who, as Izze noticed, "interacted" with the kids in the most wonderful way. He sat at the table with them, had them laughing 'til their sides ached, and was just an all-around great guy. I hope he gets discovered in a major way!

And like our other fave, Jack Sprat's, hot pretzels with a dijon dip and a side of fresh butter with tomato accents brought a complimentary touch of delish to the table.

Excellent food, excellent service. Yes...this place is a winner!

I don't want you all to think that every day has been a total pity party...we did have the very-best-vacation-in-the-world (especially if you are recuperating from surgery) at the ultra-luxe La Costa Resort. This best-time-ever treat was spent with my kids, my Ms. M and her brood, Izze & Elliot, Harm, Lynn, Julie and Chachi (with her littlest 2 girls.)
Each of the six days there featured two spa treatments per adult (I had an entire hour just having my scalp massaged one afternoon) and some of the most delicious food ever presented to this wanna-be food critic.

After a disturbing and drawn out illness where his memory was totally compromised, my brother-in-law Rand passed away at Cedars-Sinai hospital. They were not able to find the cause of his mystery illness, and are conducting extensive pathological tests to try and pinpoint the source of his disease.
We all miss him terribly.

A night of beauty.

Allie and Izze felt the need to have a little spa evening at home, so I soaked their hair in Sapoteca conditioner (ooh, the essence of marzipan...,) wrapped it in Saran, and slathered some of my precious black Biotherm lightening, peel-off mask on their soft young cheeks. Thirty minutes later, they came out of the shower silky and refreshed. They felt great, and I had a wonderful time watching them enjoy the pampering!

Ben & Elliot had spent the night over with Ian & Colin (Ben's 2nd night in a row) so I know they had a fab time as well.

On a much cuter note...

Allie and Izze wanted to pink up their lives today, so before they went to camp, I sprayed their tresses with a metallic baby pink hairspray. They are attending "Catskills, West" through the City of Beverly Hills Parks & Rec. program, and working on a performance of The Lion King. Allie is Rafiki, and Izze, Ed the Hyena. They are having the time of their lives there together...a great way to have some cousin-bonding time.
Izze's been sleeping over here (keeping Allie busy while I've been healing) so it's like they're sisters instead of identical cousins.

Ben's sleeping over at Ian & Colin's tonight (he really missed seeing them) so I know he's the happiest boy on the entire planet right now.

I hope they don't get into any trouble!

The Zipper.

I just want to take a moment and thank all of you who took the time to send me your healing wishes. I'm back on my feet now (the staples were removed this morning) and getting back into the game of life.

Sorry about the photo...I'm just a tad too fascinated with the morbid stuff not to share. The single holes are where they tried to do the operation "laproscopically" (unsuccessfully, as you can see)...then came the giant "zipper", which looks less painful than it really was. Healing up quite nicely though.

Yay! Suzi will be returning home tomorrow! Monday is not only Paris' last day in prison but Suzi's as well...though they did take very good care of her at Temple Hospital.

Monday Suzi checked into Temple Hospital to have the egg-sized gall stone removed and has an anticipated release date of next Monday, July 25th. Coincidentally Miss Holly Holly is in a hospital on the other side of town having an elective procedure. They like to do everything together!

Friday night at the Casbah...

A Post-graduation, pre-evening party for Ben, courtesy of Chachi, at the Bungalow Club.
Note the fried avocado spring rolls, the mojito martinis and the "Ahi 3 ways"...attendees Harm, Arianna, Alanna, Ben, Chachi and myself had a naughtily-good time Friday night. This would be a great place to have a private party, as there is an upstairs Moroccan-style club available for a mere $1,000. room fee (holds up to 100 people.) Something to remember.

When will your "gumball" be gone?

...asked little Allie, gently rubbing my shoulders.

I had a very unfortunate experience yesterday/today, when a sharp ache filled my abdominal cavity. Twelve hours of shivers and hot flashes combined with the searing pain prompted me to head to the emergency room at 1:46 this morning.

Diagnosis? A Gallstone has impacted itself in the opening duct of my Gallbladder.

Treatment: Lots of fluids, some constant pain-killers, and no fried or fatty foods.

End result: I missed spending the day with my dear friend Debby Schuh (in town from Buffalo to teach at Sweetpeas,) slept most of the day away, and am sitting here with the dull throb of an aching tummy, re-medicating when the pain gets too strong.

I hear music

All around me.

Last night the kids had their "Taste of Broadway" performance; the last of the sememster, the final session ever for Ben, who had participated in every workshop since it's inception. The instructor, Jenny Gordon, took a moment during the show as an homage to my son (very touching) then we sat back to hear some solos. One Day More (Les Miserables,) and Do you love me? (Fiddler on the roof) stood out, but an Our Time (Merrily we roll along) medley brought down the house. That piece was presented as a brother/sister act, with little Allie belting it out right there with Broadway-boy. This was a total goose-bump moment.

Ben will be working after school next semester as a T.A. for the Broadway class; community service credit never sounded so good!

What a day!
It started with an early morning outing to the Valley to supervise the delivery of a piano. That was the smoothest delivery ever, with the guys arriving within their window of time on time, no broken pieces or dirtied floors, and a reassembled instrument put together by a very polite crew.
From there it was off to Sweetpeas, where the incomparable Helle Greer was presenting her "Secrets of the Vintage Sisterhood" file folder book. I was so happy to see her again, and though it was a big let-down not to see dear Michelle with her, Vickie more than made up for the disappointment. I love meeting new people!
The class turned out to be more than full; it was a good thing Helle had made up extra kits, as those seats were snapped up so quick it was unbelievable!
The kids were whispering with stars in their eyes when they spotted Katey Sagal in the shop. She is such a warm, down-to-earth girl, taking the time to talk to the kids and letting them pose for a picture. She really made their day. I can tell that she's a really cool mom (congrats on the new baby!!!)
The workshop ended way past seven (Helle promised not to finish until the last pages were complete!) and she had to go back down to Coronado. Miss spending time with you, lady!
I am so exhausted right now...I'm going right to bed!

Grease: Allie's night.
Allie's performance in Grease was tonight. She seemed to be a foot shorter than all the other girls (though not the youngest...) but her big personality made her stand out again. I took a short clip of her singing ...you can tell how exhausted she was, but she's so dern cute. We had a great time the past few weeks rehearsing and all, but I'm so glad it's over. Between her three shows this week, and Ben's three last week, we're all pretty much Grease'd out.

Coming up this Monday night: A Taste of Broadway's showcase, "The Best of Broadway."
It will be Ben's last performance in this unique after-school program created by the dynamic Jenny Gordon.

Dinner with the girls...
My friend Susan took me to dinner tonight at Oishi* for another celebration; Donna and Harmony were able, at the last minute, to join us for the fun. The fish there is always so fresh and full of flavor (and very reasonable...)...a real pleasure. Of course, the company made it even better than usual. Donna and Harm had never met Susan before, and they all hit it off beautifully.
I've been helping Susan with the John Tracy Clinic "crop" she's organizing for Saturday, July 14th (at the clinic) and Harm & Donna were the perfect people to talk with when it comes to brainstorming. I think that this event is going to be the best cropping opportunity I've seen in a long time. Susan has put quite a program together; rumor has it that sisters Linda Woods and Karen Dinino (Visual Chronicles, Journal Revolution) will be leading one of the three free workshops during this 12 hour event.

Po' Allie.

Today Allie's fourth grade class had their field trip to Knott's Berry Farm (to learn about the Gold Rush.) Because of her still broken paw, it would have been difficult for her to negotiate the park on crutches, so she opted to stay back. Instead of taking the easy "day in bed" option offered up to her, she chose instead the "help out the little kids" option. I was very pleased with her choice, as the schools do get a daily stipend from the state based on attendance. So little miss marvellous spent the day helping Mrs. Lucky and Mrs. Lehman (1st & 2nd grade instructors, respectively.) No worries on Allie's part about missing out on the fun. She knows she'll be going to Knott's this summer on a camp field trip.

Tonight...

I went with Allie to Temple Emanuel Beverly Hills for a Shabbat family dinner followed by their "Synaplex" Shabbat service. This congregation is the warmest, most welcoming group of people that I've ever come across. Of course the fact that they put out a mighty delicious buffet didn't hurt the experience. Two kinds of rice (one with saffron, the other with a tempting mix of fruits, nuts, and other imaginative bits), potatoes, chicken nuggets (not dry), roasted chicken, stuffed chicken medallions, brisket with broccoli, Chinese chicken salad (and another big salad), and egg roll were just some of the bites offered up. There was a lemonade fountain for the kids (very cool) and a decadent dessert bar. Allie was in heaven!

When we entered the sanctuary for the service, there was my friend Hilary with her son Noah! She was there for my friend Jennifer Cohen's son Max Schwartz' Bar Mitzvah! Small world.

We snuck out just before the Oneg (Allie was just wiped out.)

What a wonderful night!

Launch Party

Tonight I was invited to the launch party of Your Wedding Day magazine at the newly remodeled Sofitel on Beverly Blvd (across from the Beverly Center) for event specialists. The flowers were all done by the fabulous Eddie of Tick Tock Couture. He never ceases to come up with a fresh feel to enhance any color palette. My partner in sublime for the evening was the ever helpful event assistant Chachi, who looked amazing. She got so many compliments on her Michael Kors snakeskin heels! She kept having to explain to the ladies that they were from the Miami Neiman Marcus (you can't get them here,) much to their dismay. I should have such a problem. All of the food was prepared by the iron chef champion Kerry Simon himself! How cool to have him actually do some of the tray passing. There were mini-cupcakes and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies with shots of cold milk. I was able to take some of the signature cotton candy home for the kids (they were thrilled!) All of the furnishings were provided by Classic Party Rentals. I especially loved the Moroccan feel of the sitting areas. Yes, this was one of Harmony's Bridal Bar's events. She really knows how to pull a party together.

Frittelli's.

There's a new fad in town: Frittelli's. Forget the Dunkin', Krispy Kremes, Winchells and other deep trans-fatty fried circlets of sinfully golden delight...Frittelli's proclaims "Trans-fat free" (gourmet?) doughnuts...and they're delicious!
The best part of this blessedly scrumptious den of delight? It's within a moment's walk from my home, at 350 North Canon Drive in Beverly Hills!

Right at this moment, I think this is a good thing (because I'm doing my best not to indulge myself,) but I'll let you know in a couple of weeks if my resolve is as true as I believe.
I did bring a box of these babies home this afternoon; Ben and a few of his friends were here working on a homework project, and they needed a "healthy" snack.
The project they were working on was for their "sex ed"; they were making a youtube video on practicing "safe sex". It's pretty silly, but they had fun making it... AND they enjoyed the snackage!

Lookie Here!

My friend Susan gave me this pen to give to Harmony. It's made by Bionic Ear, a marvellous company that manufactures cochlear implants for the hearing impaired. Susan is really cool...she does a ton of work for the John Tracy Clinic, and is the driving force behind the upcoming fundraising crop there on Saturday, July 14th.

I spoke with Madison over at My Mind's Eye earlier this afternoon, and he is putting together a major amount of swag for the goody bags at that crop. It's so heart-warming to know that big companies care enough to help in these ways; giving begets giving. A Drum Roll, Please...

I don't enjoy going to the circus since they've become so p.c. with the animal acts. The best part of the three ring extravaganza to me, was seeing the elephants, the lions, the dancing poodles.

I am naturally, completely, drawn to images of the classic shows, especially any old clowns, unusual freaks, and of course, the menagerie. If not for my even greater passion for arte de Mexico, I'm afraid I'd be living under the big top myself.

I appreciate the whole Cirque du Soleil movement of human grace and dexterity, and have enjoyed seeing a few different incarnations of that genre. Slava and the Snow show was a visual feast. But really, I'd like to see a classic Ringling Bros. show again, with the whole parade of rare beasts who don't seem to realize they are being taken advantage of. Please.

About last night...

The busiest girl in southern California almost broke her golden rule, by posting an entry with out a photo. Last night we had Rand over for another sleep-over; I first took a leisurely stroll with him over to Pioneer Lucerne Hardware and picked up some adhesive Velcro. Then, off to Whole Foods (across the street) to get Boo-Boo his dinn-dinn. Rand likes his food hot and natural! A few minutes after we got home, Harm called to see what was up. She and I decided it would be a good idea to get back on the walking band wagon, so she drove over, called up for me, and we headed out.

We made it all the way east to Robertson, where we made a pit stop for a light, healthy supper at Oishi. It was pretty chilly out when it was time to go, so we upped our pace to brisk, and made it back in no time. There were a couple of teen-age girls in the alley (they looked all of 14 if that) and they were smoking(!)...we gave them the stink-eye, and talked very loudly about the evils of smoking, how second hand smoke is so bad for everyone, and how illegal and bad it is for kids to be smoking. I think they got the message. Too bad I didn't recognize them, as I would have totally ratted them out to their parents. Bad girls.

By the time we got back to my pace, it was time to get Allie, who was practicing for the Vocab Olympics at Robakowski's place. Harm came along for the ride, first stopping at Angelina to pick up some fro-yo for the kids (non-fat chocolate/vanilla swirl.) We got there just in time; Allie was so worn out from learning new words that when I finally got her upstairs, she practically passed out cold.

Then, there was this morning...

Saturday morning services at Temple Emanuel, with Gary, Rand, Ben & Allie. We had a lovely time; the service was rousing, inspiring, emotional and funny...the most surprising element was when everyone threw candy up at the Bat Mitzvah girl, then later when cool Rabbi Aaron threw chunks of fresh challah out to the congregation. Allie wants to go there every week. now! When the service was over, Rand took us all to lunch at Jerry's Deli in WeHo (yes, I had hot tongue on challah with sweet/hot mustard) then I took him home so he could nap. I'm at the Bridal Bar now with the kids, paying Ms. Walton a visit...then later the kids have a YADA rehearsal. There goes my Saturday!

Open House, 2007
Tonight was the open house at Beverly Vista Elementary. The kids look forward to this night every year, not because I get to talk with their instructors, not because I get to view their year's worth of classroom projects, but because In 'n Out Burger sends their special truck out for this event for a fund-raising food fest.
This is Allie with her teacher, Denny Magasin (Ben had her as well). Besides being a really great mentor, she has 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels that are so cute. I appreciate her dedication to the Wildlife Waystation very much.

She instills a deep sense of responsibility to the animal kingdom into each child.

We made a point of visiting Mrs. Lucky and Mrs. Lehman (1st & 2nd grade teachers for both of my kids)...I strongly believe that the educational and moral foundations these instructors brought to the table added a great deal of goodness to Ben and Allie's personae. I am so lucky to have had them in my children's lives.

A Wee bit 'o lunch

Donna took me out for a celebratory lunch this afternoon to Toast on Third Street. It was her and Izze's very first time there; it won't be their last!

We all nibbled on the fresh basil & olive oil dip with fresh french baguette. Donna compared it to the delicious concoction that our friend Ruth created...but that was made with crushed Italian parsley. I prefer the basil myself.

Not wanting to stuff ourselves, Donna and I shared the most delicious cheddar cheese tuna melt on sour dough. The toasty sandwich was perfect; not so thick to cause the contents to overflow, crunchy yet light, and full of flavor. The grease-less fries were served with a creamy ranch dressing, with a few green olives placed here and there for an added accent. Mmmm! Donna snagged a bite before I could get a photo of the pristine plate!

Having a lite lunch left plenty of room for a treat; New York-style cheesecake with the most delicious graham cracker crust. The Toast touch: a bed of caramel with chocolate lettering proclaiming the creator of the cake!

You never know who you're going to run into in this town. Sitting right next to us was our favorite wee-man: Wee Man Jason Acuna!

He was so charming; happy to take a photo with Izze (boy, was Ben sad that he didn't have early dismissal today!) I had to let him know that he should try the cheesecake. A truly fine desert.

The Big Show!

Today was the big Living Portrait showcase at Beverly Vista Elementary. The din of historical characters was overwhelming; the atrium was not set up for such unusual acoustics! I was so amused by Allie, who brought a stuffed gorilla and wore one of Chachi's safari hats. She received a very positive response for her portrayal of Jane Goodall.

Allie's friend Eric was a natural as Harry Houdini. I love the way his frame came out.

Our good friend (and next door neighbor) Michael became Michael Jordan. He told me that he'd really like to be a fire fighter when he grows up (he is SO cute!)

Wouldn't you know it...Sarah became Martha Stewart, recounting her entire life (including tales of her unfortunate incarceration!)

I was so happy that I was able to take the morning to see the show!

It seems that she was invited, as an industry leader, to the Parker Palm Springs for a two night, three-spa treatment venue-visiting extravaganza. She called me this afternoon to check in (I couldn't go with her this time; besides the kids and all, I have a very important meeting tomorrow morning.) and regaled me with tales of her detoxifying seaweed wrap, relaxing hot stone massage, and cleansing facial. That girl really knows how to work!
I hope she took pictures of the food.

Pretty Holly

She's probably going to kill me for posting this photo, but doesn't Holly just look marvellous! Harm and I went with her to Saks Fifth Avenue on Wilshire this weekend to get her the hottest foundation in the entire universe: Giorgio Armani. This is the only foundation that really makes everything better. It covers redness and evens out the complexion with no chance of break outs. It's no wonder that Allure magazine (among others) deem the Armani foundation the best in the whole wide world. The most fun was watching while they "matched" Holly's skin tone, then proceeded to finish up her entire face with the perfect compliments in the Armani product line. Now if I only had an extra thousand dollars myself...

Holly was thrilled to see the wonderful offerings at Forth and Towne (our favorite clothing store). She was also as emotionally wrecked to hear that they are actually shutting their doors forever 0n June 15th. It seems, that although they have been highly successful, the idiots over at The Gap have decided to close this idyllic store in order to concentrate on bringing back The Gap brand. Stupid corporate fools. Oh well. We can only hope that some genius resurrects the lines offered. Shoot. It was so satisfying to find fashionable clothing offered from size 2-22 at a reasonable price.

Today's Happening:

I went in to help Harmony out with a few details while The TV Guide channel came in to tape a segment at The Bridal Bar this afternoon.
Leslie at Fantasy Frostings provided five different flavors of their legendary wedding cakes for the "bride" to test, and the always tasteful Eddie of Tick Tock Couture Flowers took care of the posies. Linens and tableware was provided by Classic Party Rentals, and all of the other top notch vendors got oodles of praise during the taping.

I especially loved the brilliant blue splits of Martini & Rossi . What a fun compliment to an event!
Keep your eyes on the TV Guide channel; I'm not sure when the segment will air, but you'll love it when it does!

Dinner with the gals

I met up with Holly and Jeannine last night for a 6:30 dinner at McCormick and Schmicks on Rodeo (I like that it's in walking distance). Though it took me only seven minutes to walk over, Holly had a grueling 1.5 hour drive from Simi, and Jeannine spent an hour coming from downtown. I was glad to see them. (That is Holly's Highlander coming up Rodeo in the photo.)

I couldn't help whipping out my birthday pen from William Ernest Brown; it's a Faber Castell that writes like a dream.

Michael Perfetuo moved here from Massachusetts in 2004 to pursue his dream of (!) becoming an actor. He is always so professional (he was playing the role of the waiter).

Both Holly and Jeannine enjoyed the rich, creamy, fresh lobster bisque. Although it is my very favorite, I declined, as I was martini-ying it up.

Holly was wearing her new Tiffany necklace from Philip (Mother's day gift). She told me that she moved up "from Ben Bridge to Tiffany, and from Flaky Jakes to McCormick and Schmicks!" Philip always picks the best gifts.

A Living Portrait

Allie's living portrait project "frame" is due tomorrow. Each member of her class had to choose a famous person to read up on and "become" a living incarnation of. Allie chose Jane Goodall as her subject.
Don't worry, I just drew out the chimps; Allie painted them in herself (parents were encouraged to work with their child on this). By the time I was finished cutting out the inside of the foamcore, princess fell asleep!

These are the Petits Fours served up at Holly's workshop today at the shop...I know that I'm going to post them on the Sweetpeas and Snapshot blog tomorrow, but I couldn't wait to show you them tonight. That Buttercake Bakery sure does a good job. When I went in this morning to pick them up, the owner was packing up a box of goodies to send to Oprah (for a special episode)!

I have no control sometimes.

Morton's
Not to be confused with the Chicago-based chain (Arnie Morton's), Morton's on Melrose in West Hollywood is the place to be seen on Oscar night.
Tonight, it was the place to see uncle Leon, Paul, my aunt Carol (down from Cambria), Donna and me. What a wonderful meal!

My Grey Goose apple martini matched the color of my blouse this evening. No, I did not spill a single drop, it was just a coincidence.

Carol had some red wine (don't ask me what variety; it's not my thing...) that had the best "nose" she'd ever had. Donna agreed. I can't even smell wine; the sulfates get to me.

I started with the hot artichoke appetizer. Donna and Carol shared a Caesar, and Paul had the Belgian Endive salad. Leon had the most delicious looking bowl of corn chowder (sorry, my photograph did not do it justice!)

I did my best not to dip in the naughty creamy artichoke accompaniment.

Leon opted for the shrimp cocktail as his main course. Each shrimp was huge, yet flavorful. No surprise.

Carol had the rib-eye, Donna, wild Alaskan Salmon, Paul had the chicken breast, and I went for the Dry aged New York steak per our waiter Sal's recommendation. My advice: always listen to your waiter!
The coconut cream pie was so outstanding that I couldn't get a picture of it before it was completely devoured. Sorry. We were sad to read in today's Los Angeles Times that the restaurant will be closing it's doors at the end of this year due to lease issues. It is truly going to be missed by the community; I feel terrible for the wait staff. They are an amazing team that works so well together. I only hope that something happens to change the circumstances before it's too late!

Went to a garden party...
Our little friend Emma turned three today, and had a special Alice in Wonderland tea party. Ryan, the stylist from the Leeza Gibbons party last month, took care of all the decor (I think he did a marvellous job!)

Ryan is a genius. He planted these flowers this morning (not all of them are real!)

The long table was set with individually decorated cookies (Ryan made them.)

The soft deli rolls filled with a selection of meats and salads were a hit.

It's been coming around!
Besides having the best parking karma of any other person I've ever encountered, I've just been counting my blessings.

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20,+++++++++++++++++++++++++etc...

I'm especially thankful for blessings number 1, 2, and 3.

I've spent the last few hours at The Bridal Bar helping Harmony with some printing and such. We've been very busy getting stuff together for an upcoming event. I'll tell you all about it when it's over (sorry, no sneak peek this time.)

Blog Entry #400
For this very special entry, I thought I'd share some details about a very special party I attended last night with Harm.
Internationally celebrated event designer and entertainment guru Preston Bailey, with The Bride and Bloom magazine, lavished eye candy on the Cooper Building Penthouse, downtown Los Angeles. I'd never had a Purple Velvet Martini before! Delish.
Preston's floral arrangements were gorgeous; his signature cascading floral chandelier was of course in evidence, but I prefered the table-top presentations myself.
We didn't stay too long (long, hot day yesterday,) but it was an honor just to meet the man in such an lovely venue.

Lush is just about the best adjective to describe last night (and I'm not talking about the cocktails!)

The photographs were taken by Cup of Joe Photo (yes, I was unprepared to snap, having left my purse at home.) He gives good saturation!

Promises Kept.
It's very comforting to know that certain people can be counted on to follow through when they make promises.
Among that short list of confidants is Holly Dye, who sent over this batch of photographs early this morning as promised. I did notice, however, that all of the photos which contained images of Holly have been carefully deleted. Hmmm. I can assure you that she looked absolutely stunning in a Hawaiian print dress in shades of periwinkle blue.
Holly had found the new Martha Stewart collection of craft materials at her local big box. Monkey loved her monkey! Note the dotted gift wrapping in Allie's hand; random brown dots are flocked for texture...a feature not listed on the label. Just a very clever surprise dimension.
Included with her monkey project was a Gel-A-Tin set of acrylic stamps (also featuring a monkey.) Allie took them to school today so she could amaze her friends.

Here, the Victorian fan cleverly conceals the 5,000 varieties of tea (well, okay, not that many...) including Lemon Souffle, Chocolate Raspberry, and other odd blends. We stuck with the English Breakfast tea with milk, except for Ben, who has a penchant for peppermint.
The Gilded Rose Manor's menu offering was not lacking. If anything, there were too many things to choose from. (Yes, those are Izze's black polished fingernails!)

By the way, if you'd ever like to open your own tea-house-as-a-business , The Gilded Rose Manor offers a course for success in that endeavor!

Each place setting has mismatched china for more charm. The kids had to switch their cups around between themselves and a neighboring table, in order to get the shape and pattern that suited their aesthetics. That was not so difficult; there were so many patterns from which to choose!

Somebody had a good time.
(See, no artificial sweeteners were encouraged!)

Included in the sugar bowl were the large lumps of natural brown sugar as well. Ben has a sweet spot for those; when he was younger, he always looked forward to munching on those lumps when we would eat at the Newsroom Cafe on Robertson. We haven't gone there for at least four years (I don't know why!) They feature huge portions of healthy food, and they're right across the street from The Ivy.

I pretty much avoid that busy block now that the paparazzi are so pervasive. Parking can be a b%^&.

These quartered peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were served on the prettiest pastel pink bread. Even Izze, who detests the idea of pb&j, went hog wild and chowed down on the grub (that didn't sound very lady-like!)
Ben has deemed these grilled cheese sandwiches to be the very best in all the land. I can see why; crispy, buttery, no crust and no messy oozing!

I've only highlighted the children's portion of the tea, as the adult fare was not unlike any tea served across the nation. I'm sure you already know what they are like!

SHOUT OUT

Over the past 24hrs, I've been thinking of these dear friends, though physically far from me, are embedded deeply in my heart this weekend. They've each taken time from their busy lives to phone, email and televise our friendship this weekend.

The Cake

I was very happy with the birthday cake; I tend to be on the critical side when it comes to cakes, having been in the bakery biz for so many years. The American Girl people did a better than average job with the frosted cake; smooth icing with piped on dots and the ribbon...I give them snaps!

Allie huffed, and puffed, and blew out the candles.

The sliced cake was brilliantly presented with fresh peppermint ice-cream served up in tiny green flower pots. Impressive!

Baby loves her Harmony!

The geniuses behind the American Girl machine really have the concept down pat. The hot pink, black and white decor set the scene, tip-top wait staff and delicious food made the party. Our little ladies did not stop laughing and enjoying themselves!

First Course: Mini-Cinnamon Buns
Second Course: Veggies, Spinach/Artichoke dip and chips
Main Course: Huge selection!
Dessert: You'll see!

Izze had the pizza. Notice the borrowed doll; each girl who didn't bring their own doll was offered a doll to foster for the meal, each with their own chair and tiny tea cup!

Great news for Allie...

She got a phone call today from the local market research company, who, after asking a good 20 minutes of questions, determined that she qualifies to participate in a two-hour American Girl survey.

AND they're going to pay her $100.00!

Coincidentally, she is going to the American Girl Cafe on Saturday for her tenth birthday dinner. She is SO excited.

So lucky that we live near the newest American Girl Place. You can guess that she already put her doll, Jess, in her special "travel" outfit. Allie bought her last July (with her own money) when we had tea at the Cafe there with Harm and Ben. She's been back a few times since (friends parties,) and is so looking forward to her own celebration.

Tomorrow, I'm picking up a box of cupcakes from Buttercake Bakery for her to share with her classmates. She's opted for a selection equally split: half chocolate, half red velvet.

Sunday is her actual birth date. She's planned an afternoon tea outing with Holly Dye and company, at The Gilded Rose Manor in Northridge. It's a Dye-namic ritual, going there with Holly Holly.

We love a celebration!

I was driving back to Sweetpeas this afternoon, down Santa Monica Boulevard (the sun was beating down...) when I saw this billboard. Thank goodness I was at a red light, or I may have caused an accident taking this photograph. I don't know if you can make out the words in the parenthesis, but the sign actually reads "and possible vomiting and loose stools".

I just may have to tune in!

Oh, the stories I could tell...

I've spent the past week fielding interviews from human-interest magazine editors, all wanting to know the details of Britney Spears shopping spree at Sweetpeas and Snapshots (4/25/07.)

Now I can tell you what I told the publications...we'll see if any more press is received for the store over the next few days.

Britney was in the most excellent physical shape; no visible body fat or cellulite. This I can say with complete honesty, as I personally experienced full-frontal-Britney up close and accidental. I had gone back to give her cousin Allie a business card for Sweetpeas custom-album services, and unwittingly caught an eyeful of the 100% nude Ms. Spears (who had just finished trying on the vintage dress and pink tutu, which she purchased.) Honest critique? Her bronzed, glowing skin was smooth and toned, and (not to sound too WeHo, but this is Britney after all!)...her breasts were standing up like a nubile adolescent. No visual evidence of the usual baby-stretched skin that most women get. Impressive!

Amy Tangerine chatted up Britney and Allie during a portion of their shopping time, finding out that the visual curb-appeal of the shop had caused Britney to pull a fast U-turn to check it out. The fact that she was so taken with the merchandising and products inside made the experience just so much more satisfying. Mary really has an eye for making things beautiful...the silhouettes on the window this season are total eye candy. I understand she'll be having the country's pre-eminent silhouette artist (as seen in Martha Stewart Living) come to the shop for custom cuttings at the store's anniversary party. Celebration.

Girls night out took on fresh meaning tonight with the most enjoyable celebration. Holly, Allie and I hit McCormick & Schmicks (Rodeo Drive) with Harm, who was pinch-hitting for miss Jeannine (sidelined by a deadline.)

Doesn't this "Baseball Steak" just fit the bill? Holly ordered it up after my favorite waiter so lusciously described it (without exaggeration!)

I stuck with the fish, savoring this tender Mahi Mahi with butternut squash and Himalayan red rice (the best grain in the entire world!)

Harm had a magnificent cheeseburger, while Allie enjoyed the $6.95 child's portion of fresh Salmon. They actually have the best kid's menu in the city...and their happy hour menu can't be beat value-wise. You know I love a deal.

Executive Chef David Iina popped over to check on us. He was so gracious and warm; a total delight. Last time I was there with Jeannine, the maitre 'd spent a lot of time schmoozing with us at the table; again, he warmly welcomed my friends and me back with zeal. They sure know how to treat their guests!

It was a chocolate fest at the table. Between the hot lava cake and the tempting bread pudding with chocolate and vanilla bean sauce, we didn't know what to do. Solution? Allie's Creme Brulee (not shown.)

What were we celebrating? You'll just have to check back here tomorrow night, when my "People" can give you the "Insider" scoop on what's "OK" in the world. Don't forget to keep "InTouch".......

I had to send out the MAY DAY signal this May Day, as my neighborhood internet has gone down. Fortunately, Sweetpeas' system is working, allowing me to post these pics from Artsy Mama's May Day Basket Swap!

The top picture I had to lift from my hostess' blog (like I said, my 'net is down, along with my photo-access!)...she fulfilled my fantasy of a Viva Mexico basketa. I am so happy with it, that it will be living outside of the closet year round. Gracias, Kari!

This next picture I lifted from the flickr group that Artsy Mama put together for the swap. This basket was sent to my Holly Dye who is still blogless; I'm working on coercing her to become a freak like me (one of us...one of us...!) Her swap buddy, Stevie, did a bang up job gifting her with some vital art bits and unusual goodies.

I don't take ice in my soft drinks ever (hate anything diluted.)

I don't like my food to touch...think borders between the rice and chicken. You can guess that it follows that I eat each section separately in their entirety before moving to the next section.

I have no patience for poor service. I expect to get as good as I give, and can be quite nasty. Really.

I can't bring myself to drink tap water.

I engage strangers in random conversation practically wherever I go, much to the chagrin of my companions, unless I'm with my sister, who happily joins in on the banter.

I can't stand having anything on my hands. This is really odd, as I used to be a professional cake decorator, and somehow managed to rarely get the icing on myself. Can you imagine how I would freak out when the airbrush color would occasionally get on my fingers? Ew!

I totally immerse myself in the moment, in an obsessive/compulsive kind of way. Can't help it. On the flip side of that, I can completely shove unpleasant thoughts right out of my head (talk about denial!)

You're Going to Love This One...

Tonight, while the kids were at a Bat Mitzvah, I babysat for baby at Donna's Rosewood Elementary School fund raiser (I couldn't go to the party and socialize right now...too many things going on here.) I dragged Beau Peep with me, as I often have issues with crowds (I need a buffer.) She kindly obliged my idiosyncracy, and sat beside me all night while Donna did her duty.

Puppy was very good, using the Potty Pad when necessary and sleeping away most of the night. Out of nowhere, a security guard sat down beside us, telling us that an evil mom in red

wanted the dog outta there! He laughed and told us not to worry, she was welcome to sleep there. We shot the breeze with him for awhile, teasing the 23 year old guard, asking if he thought if any of the moms at the event were hot. He said "Oh no...none of those ladies would do" and went on to say "If she ain't 280, she ain't my lady!"

We were dumbstruck, then broke out laughing. That was one we'd never heard before; he was a total chubby-chaser! Ha!

By the way...don't worry, baby never got even a lick of that beer!

Big Day.

We took Donna's puppy everywhere today. It was my niece Izze's 10th birthday (Allie's 10th is next weekend) and she wanted to celebrate everywhere. We had tea at Prana Cafe this morning, then lunch at Jerry's Famous Deli in the afternoon. Allie held baby while she dozed during lunch (we were sitting outside, so no health department rules were broken.)

Dinner with the gals
A delightful evening was spent tonight with dear friends Holly (Dye) and Linda (Woods.) The setting? M's pic Cafe Bizou in Sherman Oaks. What a treat!

Linda and I had the delicious sesame crusted Salmon on a bed of thin potato pancakes and a mushroom reduction.

Holly had the spicy shrimp with angel hair pasta. Mmmm, divine (the cocktails served up by "Matt" were pretty tasty too!)

The waitress got the idea that it was Holly's birthday (I don't know how?) Don't worry...the banana custard in a puff pastry drizzled in chocolate was on the check!

Tiramisu? Yes, sitting in a pool of fresh custard!

AND a flourless chocolate cake. I was told that it was on the "eggy" side...but still devoured.

The best thing about the night was just hanging out with the ladies. A good time was had by all.

Britney Spears likes Sweetpeas style!

Check out the Sweetpeas and Snapshots blog to read about our Britney Spears experience (I got permission from her staff to blog about the event; no sneak attack here!)

From my perspective, I got about as up close and personal as one can get with her in the back room (zipper duty)...she was in really great shape (and very nice!) I've read lately that she was "lumpy", but I can tell you from a this-close-perspective, that she was slim, tanned and toned. I was also surprised to read elsewhere that she was "saggy", but I protest: they were standing up and talking to g_d! All those nit-picking-nellies should just leave the girl alone. She's been through it and is doing a great job staying on track; they should give her a break!

Remember...the camera adds 10lbs.

What've I been working on? Besides tapping into the deeper creative regions of my mind for my book projects, I've been putting together a May Basket Swap with Artsy Mama's group. Kari's really arranged a fun trading experience here; a wonderful diversion!

Our Own Version.

Last night was the first in an anticipated full summer season of episodes of the new "Finer/Feinstein series, "Trading Spouses: Save a Sister's Sanity"

I've written occasionally about the issues my brother-in-law Rand is having with his memory loss and Alzheimer-related dementia symptoms; his brain biopsy and other assorted tests. Well, he has been declining pretty rapidly, and it is very difficult for my niece and nephew to comprehend. The worst part: his uncontrollable cursing. In order to give the kids a break last night, Ben, Allie and I spent the night at Donna's place, and Rand slept at ours. The results were very positive. The kids had a fun sleepover experience, and Rand was happy to have someone to listen to his repetitive rantings (Gary is being a very good sport in all of this.) This may be our summer vacation!

The X-Rays Confirmed...

Allie has a broken foot! The "sprain" incurred at school Wednesday (she tripped over a back pack left in the hall) turned out to be a break (albeit small.) Rand's brother Dr. Barry zapped her X-ray in his office yesterday, and ordered up a walking cast (due Tuesday.) She is now wearing a post-op-orthopedic boot until the cast arrives, and is using crutches.

I don't think I've ever seen her so happy!

Remember when you wanted braces, or glasses, or crutches? A great dream...until you got what you wished for! I have a feeling she'll be griping about those crutches by the end of the weekend.

Allie was Amuse-d...
A big manila envelope arrived this afternoon, thick with surprise, earmarked for miss Allie. What a treat; a decorated stamped tin (definitely Amuse rubber,) a delightfully tissue-wrapped paperback book, and some sweets, all from our friend Michelle M. White (Allie especially loved the Crocs charms!) Michelle's site always showcases such creative ideas for inspiring aspiring stampers; take a peek and you'll see what I mean!
It arrived at a very good time, as Allie twisted her foot at school today, and is in some pain (looks like a sprain.) She was feeling a little sorry for herself, but this treat totally lifted her spirits.
